Dear Lebanese Outdoor Adventurers (LOA), join us this Sunday for a unique hike in Jabal Mar Elias Hadchit.
The Jabal Mar Elias Hadchit trail takes hikers through a historic site where Prophet Elias built his hermitage in a cave atop the mountain, once used by Canaanites and Phoenicians for its strategic views over the surrounding valleys and sea. The hike passes through Ban, Hadchit, and Blaouza, featuring uphill climbs, panoramic views of Qannoubine and Qozhaya valleys, and a cliff with naturally sculpted rocks. Along the way, hikers enjoy orchards of olives, apples, and cherries before ending near Mar Elias church in Blaouza, a site believed to have evolved from a Canaanite temple to a Christian monastery.
Blaouza, in the Qannoubine Valley, has a strong Maronite and Aramaic heritage. Its name means “almond plains,” and locals speak Arabic with an Aramaic-influenced accent. Unlike many Maronite villages, Blaouza’s residents identify as Aramean rather than Phoenician, highlighting the region’s distinct cultural identity. This trail combines natural beauty with rich historical and spiritual significance.
